Connecting the Region

The Rail Trail is part of a bigger vision for the Manawatū: in time there will be a interconnected network of off-road trails linking communities, landscapes and destinations across the region.

With Palmerston North as a central hub, the network will make it easier for people to explore the region by bike, on foot and through other active recreation — connecting our towns and communities while showcasing what makes the Manawatū unique.

Our Story

The idea for repurposing the railway line was the brainchild of locals within the Bainesse and wider district back in 2016.

The intention has always been to re-establish the old Foxton – Longburn railway line into an off-road trail for pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrian riders.  The Rail Trail will uniquely be a Grade 1 trail of 28 - 34 kilometres in length with three loop options – including a beach ride.  The Rail Trail will link together physical activity while educating travellers on European’s settlement and Māori history as it relates to the lower Manawatu.

Palmerston North will act as a HUB for the Rail Trail and other regional trails.  Offering locals and visitors a wide range of experiences via safe off-road interlinking trails when visiting the region.  In time cyclists and walkers will be able to interlink with trails taking them to Wellington or via Woodville to Napier or Masterton.  Opening doors to diverse experiences, while increasing tourism opportunities

Our Goal

Shared pathway Palmerston North
Foxton village

We aim to develop an off-road, Grade 1–2 rail trail connecting Longburn, Himatangi and Foxton. The trail will provide a safe, accessible and enjoyable experience for people of all ages and abilities, with the facilities and amenities making it a welcoming destination.

We will uniquely define our trail and its story with flora, fauna and art sculptures.  Bring alive the areas story in an engaging and memorable way.  By adding value, we will drive forward sustained economic growth for Manawatu and Palmerston North.

The Rail Trail will provide a place for recreation, connection and improved health and wellbeing, while encouraging more people to explore the lower Manawatū. It will also support local businesses, strengthen rural communities and contribute to long-term economic growth across the region.

The Proposed Trail Sections

Progress Up-dates

Updated on the 16th august

We’re continuing to make progress towards bringing the Rail Trail to life. Presently we are actively developing S1: the Stock Route and SH 56 .

The Stock Route

We are currently working to finalise an easement agreement with LINZ for a piece of land known locally as the Stock Route.

The 850 metre section runs between Reserve Road, west of the railway line, and Ngaire Street South. Originally, it was a stock route and accessway leading towards the freezing works, with paddocks to hold stock before slaughter.

One of our volunteers discovered the overgrown and unused section of land, and we are now working to give it a new purpose. The Stock Route will provide a safe and affordable connection between the Palmerston North Shared Pathway and the City to Sea Rail Trail along the old Foxton railway corridor.

Phase One Fundraiser

SH56 Railway Corridor

We are continuing to work with NZTA to secure a License to Occupy along the approximately 6.1 kilometres of the old Foxton railway line.

One of the key issues currently being worked through is how the route is classified and who will be able to use it. We are advocating for a trail that can be enjoyed by a wide range of users, including walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

We are continuing to work constructively with NZTA to find a solution that allows the trail to be as inclusive and accessible as possible.
